Package Tracking With Google Maps
I’ve just published an update to my universal package tracking tool that now enables you to view a map of your package’s progress as it travels across the country.
This new mapping addition builds on the original features of being able to track UPS, FedEx, USPS, and Airborne/DHL packages all in one place and having that tracking information published into a personalized RSS feed. The system automatically detects which company your tracking number belongs to and loads the package data for you.
A nice side benefit of this new addition is that I’m developing a pretty robust Google mapping class, helping my other map projects to evolve.

Sweet, how many uses are there to google maps!

March 6th, 2006 at 4:19 am
Cool idea..
I tried the RSS Feed for my package and it doesn’t seem to work.. I am not sure if I am doing it wrong, or if the link is bad..
You should sell this to UPS :)
March 6th, 2006 at 5:04 am
I have a site that allows you to do package tracking. I had to remove UPS tracking due to a letter from the UPS lawyers, so watch out.
They’re not being nice in getting it working again.

Package Tracking With Google Maps
I’ve thought this would be a cool idea for a long time. Give a UPS tracking number and see where it is and where it’s been.
March 6th, 2006 at 8:21 am
Very inventive combination, thanks for making this!
March 6th, 2006 at 8:24 am
Doesn’t seem the DHL/Airborne tracking is working correctly. When I try a DHL number it always tells me it was delievered from norcross, GA to macon, GA no matter what tracking number I enter.

March 6th, 2006 at 11:55 am
can you do a mashup of craigslist YARDSALES locations and Google Earth; many people (me!) would like to optimally plan their yardsale tour based on proximity and neighborhood. A ‘bird’s eye’ view would help… and YOU’RE THE MAN TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!
March 6th, 2006 at 1:42 pm
Seriously, this rocks! A dashboard widget? Sure, that would be cool. A working RSS feed–stellar ;) But overall this is totally cool…the UPS people will proably have a cow over this (but only if they are total tools)…but until then I will use this daily!
Thanks for all of the time you spent on this–it was worth it from my pov!

Hi!
I’m developing a web-tracking project (FedEx, TNT and DHL are involved), and i’m very interested in your work.
Is the code avaiable? (GoogleMaps integration)
Please, send me a mail if you want to do business :)
March 6th, 2006 at 3:51 pm
Keep getting an error. Running IE. time in log file should be 3:50PM PST feel free to cantact me if you need more details. Map and everything seems to pop up, but at the end of loading error is generated.
Also is the code available?
March 6th, 2006 at 5:06 pm
Unfortunately, I cannot open source the code on this project. Last year, I entered into a two-year exclusive licensing agreement with another website and won’t be able to release code specifics until 2007.
March 7th, 2006 at 1:32 am
Where are you getting the tracking data from? I’m tracking a UPS package, and it shows more specifics than the UPS site does. Specifically, UPS.com only shows the package as having departed New Jersey, while your site also shows that it is enroute to California. Sweet!
March 7th, 2006 at 3:34 am

March 7th, 2006 at 8:28 am
Try this one: Has data, but no mapping data: 1ZX2889V0392276225
March 7th, 2006 at 7:35 pm
Okay, I’ve upgraded the geocoding system to be self-learning.
My primary data source is now located on-server.
If there is a point it can’t find, it fails over to an online service and adds the new entry to the datbabase.
If the online service is unavailable or can’t come up with an answer, my system then makes a smart guess as to where to plot the point.
March 7th, 2006 at 7:38 pm
Ferglets,
I’ll add the estimated arrival date for any service that provides it.
Sebastian & Pip,
The APIs for all of the major shipping companies can be found on their respective websites. Some are more hidden than others, but they all offer decent documentation.
Techbee,
I’ll update that tonight. =)

March 8th, 2006 at 6:45 am

March 23rd, 2006 at 1:53 am
Regarding FedEx numbers appearing as USPS:
FedEx ships via USPS sometimes. Strange but true. When they do that, they get USPS format tracking numbers that you can only track via FedEx. I’m working on this problem right now.
DHL is being unreliable right now and their customer service response is pretty poor. I’ll bring them back online as soon as possible. In the meantime, you’ll see strange results when using them.
Thanks for your comments, I appreciate the feedback!

Hi There!!
Your package tracking works better than the actual one in UPS. Yours gave me a real status, as my package was already in the US, while the UPS site still showed it was still in Germany!!
Although is good, it has a glitch, it crashes when loading the Map and IE (I’ve 6.0) goes to Page not available.
Thanks!

I really enjoy your tracking system. The map is a nice extra but I have to tell you the thing that has impressed me after using it for about 6 months is that your site seems to always have 1 and sometimes 2 more scans than even the FedEx site itself. If I check a package here and then on FedEx.com, I can usually count on FedEx.com being 1 scan/location/step behind.
Great job!

The maps appear to have broken today. What’s up? Also, I see you have not yet updated to the google api v2. I just changed my google maps testing page over to v2 recently, is why I say.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:38 pm
Regarding the breakage, The error on the page is a javascript error that map.spec is not defined. The broken line is
var minZoom = map.spec.getLowestZoomLevel(center, delta, map.viewSize);
I suspect that google has updated their api and you need to fix your script. I downloaded the generated page and switched to a preset zoom level, and then it shows a map, but for some reason without icons.
It would be really great if you could open source this nifty page so that other people can hack on it too. Out of curiosity, what language is it written in?
November 7th, 2006 at 3:43 pm
I didn’t give my real name and email on the last 2. Anyway, the website given is the generated page I downloaded and modified, and switched out for my google map key so it would work on my site.
November 8th, 2006 at 3:10 am

Could you use the driving directions to show the real path? it would only work for truck or surface/ground shipping… but can you know that for each of the services? e.g. when fedex says “loaded on truck” then map the next segment as driving directions.
Also, could you do a lookup for “fedex” or something to find a business address so it was even more precise? currently it goes to the centre of the city area returned as the location. But you can ask google for “fedex shipping facility” or “fedex -kinkos” int the city, and try to get a real address.
July 9th, 2007 at 9:40 am
I had the same thought as Tom Tobin- it would be nice to see the “fastest route” driving directions used for the line.

This saved my life, I swear this is the best thing that ever happened to me in the last 2 years of my life.., I had been on the phone with ups for days to track a package that some %$#@ took my electronic labels I sent him for 2 package. He copied one of them and put the same label on 2 different packages..UPS said I may never see the package again..as one was delivered but the other one worth $30,000 could not be tracked because it had the same label and tracking number attached to the one that was delivered, I have been out of my mind for 48 hours, after finding your site and seeing where the package is my life has changed, I can sleep and I would like to buy stock in your company and send you some candy..cheers mate.

Earlier you indicated that the code would be going open source (above, you quoted 2007). Will that still be happening anytime soon? Thanks for your reply!

This is great, it told me more about where my package was then the official USPS “tracking” information did. I knew the bozos at the post office missent my package but I didn’t know where too. Only USPS would take 6 days to deliver a package from 45 minutes away, they could have walked it to me quicker. Thanks again, this really helped.

Way very cool. My company sends me the day’s UPS tracking numbers and if our clients want tracking info, they email me. Not very efficient.
Well, now I’m going to start emailing them back the link to your tracking instead of the “official” tracking.

i just tried placing landmarks by hand, then i found out about your nice tool :)
could you add support for non-us waypoints? my packages usually come a long way and it would be nice if something else than the us map is shown.
apparently google maps recognises international fedex locators just fine, so i guess it wouldn’t be difficult to add this.

Hi,
Great job here.
Quesiton: right now I eMail my customers the Federal Express tracking #. They then go to fedX.com enter the tracking # and see where the package is.
Is there a way for me to give them the tracking # so when they click on it, it will go right into isnoop.net to show the google maps just like your example above?

I’m a Detective with the Baltimore County Police Department. We just completed a federal investigation for narcotics distribution. I’m now completing a forensic analysis of the suspect’s computer. I’ve called UPS, Fed-Ex, DHL, etc and none will offer any help.
I’m trying to find all instances of tracking numbers on the suspect’s computer. Can you provide the specific numbering convention for each carrier. I know UPS is normally “1Z”. I’m trying to find all instances of the suspect tracking packages. Knowing the specific numbering format will help greatly with the analysis of the computer.
Please email me rpeacock@baltimorecountymd.gov or call 410-887-1867. I’d like to see if you know the numbering formats for each carrier.
Thanks…

Ian,
You’re still having problems with smart post I note (the fedex service delivered by usps). Any chance that you can tweak the code so that if it shows as a USPS number but the result is “No record of that item” then you hand it over to fedex and see what response you get from them?

usps started using a longer tracking number for some reason and your tracking map application does not accept it. any chance your going to update it to accept these new longer tracking numbers? (has anyone else run in to any?) i love this application, its a great use of gmaps
