MacSaber: Turn Your Mac Into A Jedi Weapon

UPDATE: Version 1.1 is now available.

Now that you’ve spent entirely too much money on your fancy sudden motion sensor equipped Mac laptop, I predict you’ll soon be swinging it around like a loon.

Introducing MacSaber. Using your Mac’s sudden motion sensor, this software turns your computer into a Jedi weapon almost worthy of taking on the real thing by making authentic lightsaber sound effects. It senses speed for the lightsaber movement sounds and acceleration for different levels of striking sounds.

This beta is not yet compatible with the motion sensors in older Mac laptops, but I understand you can move the window arond to get the idea.

Update: Thanks go to Sak from Lot23 for the fancy icon!

I don’t know if this is the right place for feature request, and I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this earlier (sorry I don’t have time to read through every post), but here’s my feature request:

Can you make the screen turn into fluorescent colors (like the light sabers, and its intensity would change with motion/acceleration? For example, you would have a green glowing screen, then it would get brighter when you move fast and as it plays a “hit” sound. It would be nice to be able to choose what color you want (red, purple, etc.), also.

    Thanks for the cool app!

Open System Profiler and look under “Hardware” right after the Serial Number:
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
    Version: 1.0
MacSabre only works on a limited set of *Books at this time, although they don’t say which, and I would have assumed it would work on yours. It doesn’t work on mine:
    Machine Name: PowerBook G4 15″
    Machine Model: PowerBook5,6
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz

Mine doesn’t say which version of Motion sensor:

    Machine Name: PowerBook G4 15″
    Machine Model: PowerBook5,8
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.5)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.9.6f0
    Serial Number: W85448RESX2
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled

And in MacSaber, although it makes the whooshing and bzzzzzzzzz sounds, the Roll: Left 1835 Tilt: -2070 - and these values don’t change at all. What about right roll?

And why, even though in System Profiler it says my SMS is enabled, does console.log keep recording “No motion sensor available”.

There must be something to grep somewhere that gives info on Roll and Tilt, which varies in the different ‘Books and that MacSaber gets wrong.

I want my MacSaber working :(

[…] MacSaber: Turn Your Mac Into A Jedi Weapon (from /.) - Introducing MacSaber 1.0 Beta. Using your Mac’s sudden motion sensor, this software turns your computer into a Jedi weapon almost worthy of taking on the real thing by making authentic lightsaber sound effects. […] If you’re a fan of Star Wars and own a new MacBook then you might be interested in MacSaber. Using the MacBooks built-in sudden motion sensors (designed to brace the HDD for impact should you drop the thing in case you’re wondering) then this little app will produce lightsaber sound effects when you swing your MacBook around… however I really only recommend this to a) hardcore Star Wars fans and b) those with AppleCare. […] […]
