WiiSaber: A Wii, Mac, and Lightsaber Sandwich
You might recall an application I wrote earlier this year called MacSaber. If so, my new Cocoa application should be quite familiar.
Hiroaky just released a handy bit of code that adapts the Nintendo Wii’s “WiiMote” wireless controllers for use on the Mac. I have taken his idea and merged it with the magic that made MacSaber to bring you a new breed of audio Lightsaber simulator.
This application looks and works just like MacSaber, but the input device is the WiiMote instead of your Apple laptop. I plan on adding more features including more visual response and multi-controller capabilities soon, so check back again later.

You should include the isight into the app. Tracking the movement of the Wii controller and superimposing a line of light on top. That way we can all make our own Lightsabre-playing-fool-videos and upload them to Youtube. Awesome!

Great stuff! I had a blast with MacSaber when you released it, but now I’m having more fun with my Wiimote. I especially like the fact that the trigger button (B) activates and deactivates the light saber.
Just one thing to note: WiiSaber caused my Bluetooth Mighty Mouse to slow down considerably while running, and even after I quit the application. I had to turn off the mouse and turn it back on for it to return to normal. Not sure if it has to do with the Bluetooth connection, but you might want to check that out.

Crashes constantly on my July 05 G4 iBook. I did get it running once and it was pretty sweet, though it did seem to freeze up my remote- the force feedback and LEDs turned on and wouldn’t go off after one or two hits. Very cool though.
December 8th, 2006 at 5:33 pm
Fantastic! But where’s the source code? If this is based on Darwiine which in turn is based on the Wiili code, you’re subject to the GPL, no?

December 11th, 2006 at 10:35 am
Well… I know how much everyone likes kinks sooooo GOOD NEWS! …sigh.
This thing works for me for about 5 seconds and then there’s a connection problem and the program crashes. From then on out (until I restart my computer) there is a connection error that occurs leaving the program telling me about said error and crashing shortly thereafter, and the Wiimote blinking all four blue LEDs at me… it locks up the controller actually. The only way to restart the controller is to hold the power button down for 3 seconds (as in when turning off the Wii via the controller).
Sucks because… for those 5 seconds it’s AWESOME. And yes, upon restart, it does the same thing… 5 seconds and then trouble in paradise. *sniffles*
I’m running on a Powerbook G4 with OSX 10.4.8… actually it’s the newest Powerbook there is… the Intel were introduced shortly thereafter… I was thrilled.

For those having connection problems:
If/when the program crashes, go into the Bluetooth preferences inside System Preferences… Disconnect, and delete the Nintendo device.
Once the Wiimote is paired with the computer, WiiSaber (and DarwiinRemote that it’s based on) doesn’t deal with an already connected Wiimote.
May the Force be with you.

Please someone tell me there’s a wiisaber download for windows XP….
February 28th, 2007 at 1:37 am
Somehow I seem to be too stupid to use this. I activated Bluetooth on the PowerBook. After starting MacSaber and pressing 1 and 2 on the Wiimote, nothing happens.
Then I used the Bluetooth System Preferences, scanned for new Bluetooth devices, and it found the Nintendo RVL-CNT-01, but then asked for a security number to enter on the Wiimote which I obviously cannot do.
How to use this?
March 1st, 2007 at 5:41 pm
In the Bluetooth Setup Assistant, scan for devices. Select the Nintendo RVL-thing, and, before clicking [Continue], click [Passkey Options]. Now choose “Do not use a passkey for this device,” and carry on as before. It won’t ask for a passkey, and it should magically work!
Happy moting…

[...] Remember MacSaber, the little program that turned your Mac portable with motion sensing into a lightsaber (well, at least made it sound like one whilst you were wildly swinging it around)? I know some people, like me, were a little wary of swinging around their portables for fun and that is where WiiSaber comes in. [...]

[...] After Nintend released the Wii, the first I heard of using a Wiimote on a Mac was DarwiinRemote. That seemed interesting, but I couldn’t think of a good use for it not to mention even the author has in big letters that the freeware is unstable and experimental. The next evolution of course was to meld DarwiinRemote with Mac Saber to create WiiSaber. The Amazing Rolo has now taken the concept one step further and turned the Wiimote + Mac combo into the Wii Loop Machine. He uses the Wiimote to wirelessly sync, control, and manipulate loops. The whole Wiimote + Mac combo still seems pretty flakey. In the roughly two minutes I tried, I couldn’t get it to function on my iMac, though Parallels was probably getting in the way. I was able to get the Loop Machine working on a Mac Book Pro and quickly learned why I am consumer of tunes rather then a producer. The Wiimote also insisted on vibrating the whole time I was using the software which The Amazing Rolo mentioned would be fixed in the 1.1 version of the software. If nothing else, watching him use the software in the video in the link below and pictured to the left I found to be entertaining. [...]

This is a really fun little application, I only just recently got my iMac (long awaited) and although the program only makes sounds, its extremely hard to put down.
So warning, while this may be a light, impressive program with little to no system strain, it is extremely addictive and should be taken in small quantities, lest someone you know walk in on you jumping around your living room while you fight imaginary droids.

Bummer. I got the app to work for about 2 seconds and got all excited–then it crashed. Rebooted and repeated the process. Can’t wait until released version!!!

I would love, SERIOUSLY, if two wiimotes could be used on one system in battle. In this system, the two would be calibrated in 3d space by holding pointing at each other, IR to IR, and then when moved the computer tracked their 3d positions via accelerations. In this, it would test for collisions straight out from the wiimote, and if it hit the other’s beam, it would register. This would take a lot of work to get positioning and calibration up, but I would cry to have it.

How can we help? please tell us!!!

I remember suggesting this in January. It is awesome that you actually did it !
Next step would be to use the Wiimote’s IR camera to detect Wiimotes in proximity (is the angle of view sufficient?). That way you can detect collision between sabers and use the virbation motor to signal it (sound + sensory feedback = twice the fun !)
The step after that would be to modify the Wiimote and include gyroscopes so it could actually counteract your motions (their power would depend on how much acceleration is reasonable to counteract = compromise).

Any chance of rolling the latest version of DarwiinRemote (v 0.7)
into a quick update of WiiSaber?
It might fix some of the WiiSaber crash problems reported by people :-)
